Lifting the Severn tolls: Reaction from Cardiff Council

Today's news that the tolls on the Severn Bridge and the Prince of Wales Bridge will be lifted on December 17 this year has been positively received by Cardiff Council.

Cabinet Member for Investment and Development, Cllr Russell Goodway said: "Cardiff welcomes today's announcement from the Secretary of State confirming that the tolls on the two Severn crossings will cease in December. This move will bring significant economic benefits for Cardiff, the Capital Region and Wales.

"The Council looks forward to working with Government to ensure that we maximise these benefits through further development of transport links, ensuring sustainable future economic growth across south east Wales.

"The lifting of the Severn tolls also provides a great opportunity to bring added impetus to planning the future transport network for south east Wales. By continuing to improve transport links over the coming years, we can ensure that the decision to lift the Severn tolls will bring economic benefits to the whole city region, which will benefit the whole of Wales."
