Financial backing for Cardiff's Welsh-medium education expansion plans

Cardiff Council is to receive an additional £3.85m from Welsh Government to go towards funding the city's plans for the continuing expansion of Welsh-medium education provision.

The new £3.85m Welsh Government funding for the city is part of an extra  £51m to support the growth in Welsh-medium education across Wales. Detailed plans for Cardiff will be developed by the local authority, shaped by discussions with schools and the wider community.

The £3.85m is in addition to Cardiff's £284m investment, jointly funded by Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government through  Band B of the 21stCentury Schools Programme.`

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: "I look forward to the detailed plans for this latest expansion being developed, creating additional Welsh-medium provision for the city, whilst being mindful of the needs of our current schools.

"We want to grow demand for Welsh-medium education in the capital city, and as well as our Welsh in Education Strategic Plan, Cardiff 2020 - our renewed vision for education and learning in Cardiff - makes a clear and unequivocal commitment to provide more Welsh-medium school places, ensuring that provision is available to all families who choose a Welsh-medium education.

"Since 2012, the council has created a new Welsh-medium secondary school, a new Welsh-medium primary school and significantly expanded four other Welsh-medium primary schools across the city.

"Two brand Welsh-medium primary schools, Ysgol Glan Morfa in Splott and Ysgol Glan Ceubal in Llandaff North opened this month, with a third, Ysgol Hamadryad in Butetown, opening after Christmas. Additional Welsh-medium provision is also factored into our Local Development Plan.

"Our Welsh Immersion Unit has a proven track record for helping families choosing to move from English-medium to Welsh-medium education, ensuring a successful transition."
