“Thank you!”

A special event to thank the Armed Forces community in Cardiff for their service will be held at Central Library Hub next week.

Ahead of Armistice Day on Sunday, November 11, which marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, the event on Thursday, November 1 (10am - 3pm), will bring together several organisations and charities that support veterans, including the British Legion, Help for Heroes and Change Step, to raise awareness of the support available to former servicemen and women and say thank you for their service.

There will also be information on offer from Trading Standards, the Council's Money Advice team, Into Work services and Housing Options Centre.

Cardiff City FC Foundation will be at the event to promote their veterans' project which, in collaboration with the Royal British Legion, seeks to use the power of football to engage with older, socially isolated veterans in and around Cardiff who would not normally make themselves known to veteran support services.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "Our thank you event at Central Library hub is an opportunity to show our appreciation and to honour our Armed Forces community.

"As we approach the centenary of the end of World War I, it's important we remember the contribution of so many of Cardiff's sons and daughters over the last 100 years.

"Cardiff Council is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, which recognises the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces andencourages understanding and awareness of issues affecting servicemen and women. We're committed to helping the forces community to readjust to civilian life in the city and many of the services being showcased at next week's thank you event do just that."

A minute's silence will be observed during the event at 1pm  during which sea and army cadets will stand to attention throughout the library hub building.

Members of the public are also welcome to attend the event at Central Library Hub.
