One small step for man, one giant leap for the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge!

The Summer Reading Challenge is on its way back to Cardiff and this year's theme is out of this world!

Taking its inspiration from July 1969 when Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon, this year's theme is Space Chase and everyone taking part in the challenge will join thesuper space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens!

Produced by the Reading Agency and delivered by libraries nationwide, the challenge asks 4-11 year-olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer holidays. Children can sign up at any Cardiff library or hub where they will be given a colourful collector's card to keep a record of their Space Chase adventure.

The challenge launches in Cardiff on Saturday, July 13 with fun-packed parties at Central Library Hub (from 2pm) and libraries and hubs across the city, where there'll belots of activities, arts and crafts, story-times and much more.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge celebrates its 20thanniversary this year and to mark the occasion, we want lots of Cardiff children to get on board with the Space Chase adventure. More than 7,400 children signed up in our libraries and hubs last year to read their six books and we're hoping to see even more sign-up and finish this year.

"Children's reading skills may slide over the long summer break if they stop reading so the challenge is an excellent way to keep them engaged with their reading. The most important thing though is that children enjoy the challenge, as they choose, discuss and read their six books."

Children have until September 28 to complete the challenge, and they will receive a medal and certificate to show they have finished their six books.

Cardiff Hubs and Libraries have hundreds of free events and activities planned for children and families once again this summer. Pop into your local hub or library to find out what's on or follow @cdflibraries on Twitter for updates.
