Forget Black Friday, enjoy Fair Saturday
Cardiff has joined the global Fair Saturday
movement, giving residents and visitors to the city this weekend, the chance to
forget Black Friday and celebrate the power of arts, culture and heritage to
change the world.
Founded in 2014 in Bilbao, in Spain's Basque
country, Fair Saturday is a global network of 180 cities, from Lima to
Helsinki, which aims to positively respond to the global consumerism of Black
Friday with 1,200 public events on November 30th, the
day after Black Friday.
The programme for Cardiff's first Fair Saturday
includes the chance to explore sustainable design ideas at
Grangetown Hub, join a birthday party at Museum of Cardiff, check out Cardiff's
craft community at City Hall, enjoy an Arts Active session inside St David's
Hall (and a Brass Extravaganza outside) and then party into the night at a
rave, hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, in aid of the charities Welsh
Women's Aid and BAWSO.
The rave, which will take place in the Old
Library on The Hayes, will include DJ sets from: stalwart of the Cardiff
dance-music scene, Craig Bartlett; Esyllt of long running club-night Dirty Pop;
Nic Saunders, founder of club night Shangri-la; Sarah Sweeney and DJ Precious
of Cardiff-based collective, Ladies of Rage, and a special guest spot from the
man with the gold chains, the Lord Mayor himself.
Lord Mayor, Cllr Dan De'Ath, said: "I said
when I became Lord Mayor that I wanted to do things a bit differently, and I
think I can safely say that this is the first time any Mayor of Cardiff has
hosted a rave."
"Music's always been a big part of my
life, so to be able to use it as a means to raise funds for two charities, who
do some really important work to help women facing incredibly difficult and
distressing circumstances is fantastic."
"It's going to be a real party - Cardiff's
such a creative city and there's going to be lots going to mark the city's
first involvement with the Fair Saturday movement so I'm hoping we're going to
see lots of people out, enjoying some of the fantastic events and rounding
things off with a night dancing for some great causes."
