Oakfield Primary School: ‘Happy and inclusive' says ESTYN

Oakfield Primary School in St Mellons has achieved ‘excellent' in three of the five categories looked at by ESTYN, the Education inspectorate for Wales, and ‘good' in the two other areas.

During a recent visit, inspectors found the school to be a ‘happy and highly inclusive community where pupils make good progress and develop strong literacy and numeracy skills.' In addition ‘nearly all pupils have high levels of wellbeing and very positive attitudes to learning' with ‘standards of behaviour are very good with a strong sense of mutual respect and trust between staff and pupils.'

The report went onto say that staff ‘provide a very caring and supportive environment that encourages all pupils to give of their best' and that ‘teachers and teaching assistants know pupils well and deliver interesting learning experiences that help them to develop as confident individuals.'

Inspectors also commented on how the headteacher and other leaders ‘have high expectations' and that they ‘have established very thorough and robust leadership and self-evaluation processes.'

Reflecting on the success, HeadteacherMr. David Harris said: "I am extremely pleased that the inspection report reflects the strong relationships that the school has with its wonderful community and the complete dedication of the staff in ensuring that the children are offered so many exciting opportunities in which to learn."

Chairperson of Governing Body at the school, Mrs. Sian Burgess Hunt said:"Oakfield is a fantastic school where the children want to learn and do well. It is such a welcoming and thriving environment and it has been a pleasure to be able to work alongside such an enthusiastic and devoted team."

 

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "I am delighted to hear that Oakfield has achieved a fantastic Estyn report and it is wonderful to hear the positive comments, particularly relating to pupils wellbeing and attitudes to learning which is testament to the strong direction and teamwork at the school.
