Wellbeing Festival goes West

 10/03/20

Cardiff Council's Independent Living Services is hosting its next  wellbeing festival in the west of the city later this month to encourage people in the area to connect with their communities.

The three-day 50+ Active Body Healthy Mind Festival will be held in Western Leisure Centre on Monday, March 23, in Ely and Caerau Hub on Wednesday, March 25 and in Canton Community Hall on Friday, March 27 and will showcase council and partner services in the area for over 50s.

The festival is the latest event organised by Independent Living Services, which supports people to live independently at home and to be connected to their communities, to highlight activities and services in the city that can benefit people's health and wellbeing. Each day will have a theme - Arts & Crafts, Sport & Games, Music, Singing & Dance, which will be reflected in the activities and information on offer on that day.

A range of organisations and charities take part in  the festival to provide information about services including the Council's Meals on Wheels and Telecare service, Care and Repair, Diabetes Cymru, Age Connects, Sightlife Wales, Dewis Cymru and many more. Local schools will also be attending to take part in intergenerational taster sessions of various activities.

Cabinet Member for Social Care, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore, said: "The 50+ Active Body Healthy Mind Festivals are a fantastic way to connect people with local services in their community, while having a great deal of fun in the process.

"We have been delighted how well the festivals have been received in the north of the city and in St Mellons, so we're looking forward to bringing them to the Ely and Canton later this month to encourage people to become involved in activities that are on their doorstep, perhaps meet new friends and boost their wellbeing in the process."

The sport and games activities on Monday, March 23 at Western Leisure Centre include walking sports, bowls, a sporting reminiscence session, falls prevention and more. Wednesday's activities at Ely and Caerau Hub focus on arts and crafts and will include information on hobbies and social groups as well as the popular Goldies singing group.

The final day of the festival moves to Canton Community Hall on Friday, March 27 with dance and choir performances featuring music from across the decades.
