5 things every Cardiff student should know about their waste and recycling

12.10.2020

If your son, daughter, grandchild, friend or relative has started at Cardiff University this year they will be well aware there is a lot of information for them to take on board when living away from home.

If they're in private accommodation, it's important that students know how to dispose of their rubbish correctly.

These top tips will make sure they avoid any fines and ban the bin drama:

  1. Food waste can be recycled into energy. Make use of the food caddy for all unused food, including fruit and vegetable peelings, left-overs, egg shells, tea bags and coffee grounds in your kitchen caddy. More information on the food caddies can be found  here.

  1. Recycling is collected weekly in Cardiff, using FREE green recycling bags. They can be ordered online or collected from our local stockists. Using recycling and food waste collections will mean you won't have much waste left over for your black bin/red striped bags. Find your local stockists  here.

  1. If you're unsure of what belongs where, check out our Recycling A-Z - www.cardiff.gov.uk/recycleaz - and type in an item to find out how to dispose of it correctly. From polystyrene to plastic and balloons to bubblewrap we've got it covered to make sure you put your waste and recycling in the right place.

  1. If you receive a pink sticker on your recycling bin or bag, firstly check if you've accidentally placed any of the following most common misplaced items in there:

  • Food waste / leftovers in packets, tins, jars etc.
  • Textiles -such as clothes, bedding, rags etc.
  • Nappies

It's important to make sure that people are putting the right items in the correct containers so that we can recycle and compost as much as possible. Please make sure you take the recycling back in and remove the misplaced items before collection.

If you need a reminder on how the Pink Sticker scheme may affect you, take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions:  https://www.cardiffnewsroom.co.uk/releases/c25/23292.html

  1. Download the  Cardiff Gov App  and never miss a collection date again. Check your recycling and waste collection dates and set up reminders. To download the App visit the Google Play Store or Apple's App store and search ‘Cardiff Gov'.
