Blazing Squad! Andy and Bessemer Close team help fight fire

During the current Coronavirus pandemic, we've been reminded that ‘we're all in this together'. One of our colleagues has certainly stepped up to that notion, jumping into action when a fire broke out at a neighbouring business.

Andy Kahl, Heavy Plant Operator, was working at Bessemer Close Recycling Centre when the police arrived advising there had been a fire at Cardiff Slate & Stone.

In order to get to the source, the Fire Service needed to move material and were unable to do so with the limited vehicles on their site and needed to use one of our larger vehicles and an operator.

Andy has been praised by his bosses and firefighters, going straight to the site to assist then back to Bessemer Close Recycling Centre to crush our bins to prevent our site from closing and then back to the fire.

Katherine Smith, Waste Strategy & Recycling Officer, said, "Andy went over and above the call of duty. The business owner, Fire Service, Police and myself are extremely grateful to Andy and his fast action and quick thinking.

The duty manager was advised, prior to us going to the Fire, Andy also carried out Pre and Post vehicle checks."

Steve O'Connell, Station Manager at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said, "On behalf of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to thank Andy sincerely or the support and assistance he provided. This was a challenging incident that became manageable only thanks to his skills and resources.

It was a pleasure to work alongside Andy in rue joint working spirit. His contribution allowed us to close down an incident much more quickly than we otherwise would have been able to, ensuring our resources were quickly available to provide protection for the communities we all serve."

Andy said, "I was only more than happy to help the Fire Service and Police. Our key workers do an amazing job and it was a privilege to be able to assist them."

Well done Andy, and thank you!
