Garden Waste and Christmas trees update

Following our work to remove recycling and garden waste we want to advise residents that there is still a backlog of garden waste bins and Christmas trees which we have been unable to clear.

This means we will have to extend garden waste and tree collections across Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

Our intention is to collect in these areas over these days:

  • Saturday, January 16- Canton, Llandaff, Llandaff North, Velindre, Cyncoed, Pentwyn and Plasnewydd.
  • Monday, January 18 - Pontprennau, Old St Mellons, Trowbridge and Llanrumney.
  • Tuesday, January 19 - Rhiwbina, Llanishen and Lisvane.

The service has worked extremely hard to catch up where possible. All other waste streams are being collected to schedule. Unfortunately, due to staff being off ill with COVID and the large amount of Christmas waste this year, we have been unable to clear all garden waste as quickly as we would have liked. We apologise to residents for the inconvenience and thank them for their continued patience.

Please leave your uncollected garden waste and Christmas trees on street and the cleansing teams will remove them as soon as they can.

Enforcement will not take place around waste presentation during this period where areas are still to be collected.

Thank you for reading.

Help for tenants in the private rented sector

Our Cardiff Money Advice team can provide a wide range of advice and support for people experiencing money worries, including tenants living in privately rented homes who have fallen behind with rent payments.

Many renters have gone into arrears for the 1sttime ever during the pandemic, because of a reduction in income or job loss.

As well as providing advice and information on budgeting, income maximisation and debt, the team can also help in practical ways, like liaising with a tenant's landlord, accessing grants to help towards rent payments and referring into other services that could help the situation, like Into Work services.

The team are waiting to help anyone struggling with their rent but the message is, get in touch now. Don't leave it too late.

Cardiff's progress towards global recognition as a Unicef Child Friendly City

The progress Cardiff has made in working towards becoming a globally recognised Unicef Child Friendly City, will be outlined in a report to go to Cardiff Council's Cabinet when it meets on Thursday 21, January.

The report also seeks the support of the Cabinet to continue commitment to Cardiff's Child Friendly vision within and beyond the Council and advises on thenext steps in preparing for potential recognition as a Child Friendly City in Autumn 2021.

On World Children's Day in November 2018, Cardiff launched its Child Friendly Strategy, placing the rights and voices of children and young people at the heart of the city's policies, strategies and services.

The detailed multi-agency delivery plan aimed to involve children and young people in decision making and addresses the barriers which limit their life chances. It also marked a significant step towards Cardiff's ambition of being internationally recognised as one of the UK's first Unicef Child Friendly Cities,a global programme that brings together Unicef and local government to put children's rights first and supports Local Authorities and partners to deliver a child rights-based approach when designing, delivering, monitoring and evaluating local services and strategies for children.

During the two year implementation phase, Cardiff set out five goals and a series of commitments to be delivered through the Child Friendly City Strategy;

-         Every Child and Young person is valued, respected and treated
fairly;

-         Every Child and Young Person has their voice, needs and priorities
heard and taken into account;

-         All children and young people grow up in a safe and supportive
home;

-         All Children and Young people access high quality education that
promotes their rights and helps them develop their skills and talents
to the full;

-         Children and Young people have good physical, mental and
emotional health and know how to stay healthy.
