Cardiff Council Apprentice shares their experience for Apprenticeship Week

5/2/21

A Cardiff Council employee has shared her experience as a Corporate Apprentice for Apprenticeship Week (8-14 February).

The theme for this annual week-long event is ‘Build the Future' and aims to showcase the impact apprenticeships have on communities, organisations and the economy here in Wales, as well as the practical skills apprentices develop for a successful future.

Read Elen's story below as a Corporate Apprentice Marketing Assistant:

"I'm Elen and I am a Corporate Apprentice Marketing Assistant working as part of the Cardiff Commitment team in the Education Directorate. The Cardiff Commitment helps deliver business engagement opportunities for children and young people to encourage ambition, develop skills and create opportunities to them with their future careers. Following my appointment in February 2020, I began working from home due to the global pandemic and all our meetings and events turned virtual.

While the pandemic introduced a new challenge of working from home, I believe the shift to working virtually has allowed me to further expand my knowledge of digital marketing. My role involves leading on digital marketing campaigns, managing the social media accounts, working with the Council's Central Communications Team, writing copy, creating digital graphics and exploring the use of innovative platforms to reach target audiences.  My confidence has greatly improved through attending virtual meetings with internal and external partners which will set me up for my future roles.

If I were to give some advice for the application process I would say make sure you hit every point in the person specification to ensure that you meet the criteria for the role. As for the interview I would suggest that you take your time and back up every answer with an example to support it, perhaps from a previous role, school or just a life experience in general.

Good luck!"
