Investigation work for potential new Health and Wellbeing facility for Cardiff west

25/6/21

Site investigations, that could pave the way for a brand new integrated health and wellbeing facility for the west of the city, will start next week.

The Council and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) are keen to work together to develop a new Health and Wellbeing Hub for the communities of Ely and Caerau, similar to the integrated facility under construction at the Powerhouse Hub in Llanedeyrn.

While the concept is still at a very early stage, the facility would bring health and community services closer together, making it easier for local people to access services they need.

Investigative work will be taking place on parkland at the rear of Ely and Caerau Hub off Treseder Way, from Monday June 28 to identify any obstructions to developing the site in the future. Excavations at various locations will be necessary but all the land involved will be reinstated at the end of the investigations.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "We're working with the University Health Board on an idea for a new hub and while these plans are not advanced at this stage, some investigations need to be carried out to inform any design work about the suitability of the land for any future development. So people in the area will see contractors on the land near to the existing hub."

Cabinet Member for Social Care, health and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore, said: "Should the scheme progress, it will be a real boost for the local community providing a new clinical space for local GPs and other health professionals,  capable of hosting a range  of specialised health clinics - bringing them closer to the communities that use them."

The proposed Health and Wellbeing Hub is part of the UHB's vision to provide more healthcare facilities closer to home as part of its Shaping Our Future Wellbeing strategy.

Proposed designs and further details of what the facility will contain will be made public once funding and timescales for the scheme have been confirmed.
