Thirteen Cardiff households will shortly be calling a new housing development in the east of the city home, after the properties were handed over to the council today.

DeveloperJ G Hale Construction has built the 13 new council homes, a mixof two, three and four-bedroom family homes on the site of the former enterprise centre on Wakehurst Place in St Mellons.

The new houses, known now asFfos y Faendre,will be allocated to families on the city's housing waiting list. But before they receive the keys, Council Leader, Huw Thomas and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, visited the recently-completed development to see the new highly-energy efficient new homes.

Cllr Thorne said: "These new properties look fantastic and I'm sure the families that will shortly be moving in are very eager to settle into their new homes.

"They are in a prime location, within walking distance to the local shops and our excellent community hub that provides so many services and activities.

"The current demand for good quality, affordable housing in the city is unprecedented but we are doing everything we can to deliver new homes, like Ffos Y Faendre, as quickly as we can."

Contracts manager at JG Hale Construction, Andrew Collins, said:"JG Hale Construction was delighted to be chosen by Cardiff Council to deliver such an innovative scheme for local people.

"These innovative properties will be an excellent addition to the authority's housing stock, providing tenants with highly energy- efficient homes featuring the latest technologies to help combat fuel poverty.

 "We look forward to creating further new developments of high quality homes for the authority in the near future."

Each property has been designed with a fabric first approach to ensure its energy performance exceeds current Building Regulations. All properties achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A. All heating and hot water in the houses come from an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) which will help lower fuel bills and reduce carbon emissions.

The development is part of the Council's additional build programme which is contributing to the authority's overall target of delivering 4,000 new properties - 2,700 of which will be council homes in Cardiff over the coming years.
