A Cardiff parks apprentice has won a ‘Shining Star Apprentice of the Year' Award.

Morgan, who started his parks career in 2019 with a Foundation Apprenticeship in Sports Turf Maintenance before going on to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship and secure a full-time role as part of the team that look after Cardiff's sports pitches, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have won the award as it's recognition of my hard work in the last seven years."

The awards are given to individuals who have excelled in their apprenticeships but also demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, and a genuine passion for learning and public service. Having battled serious health issues as a child, and more recently overcome a brain tumour, Morgan embodies all of these qualities and more.

"I just come to work every day with a smile on my face and try to produce the best possible sports pitches for people to enjoy. I love my job, and I hope to keep learning and improving for many years to come and inspiring the next generation of apprentices."

Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: "This is fantastic recognition and a well-earned reward for Morgan's dedication and commitment to working for Cardiff. He really is a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work and a desire to learn. I'm sure the whole team are proud of what he's achieved in recent years."

"A growing number of our parks started their careers on one of our successful parks apprenticeship scheme, earning a living while also gaining the skills and qualifications needed to look after the city's award-winning green spaces."

Although applications for parks apprenticeships are currently closed there will be further opportunities advertised later this year. Morgan recommends applying for one.

"Everyone's been really supportive over the years," he said, "and I've loved every minute."
