Glyncoed Primary School in Pentwyn recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a vibrant and heartwarming event that brought together pupils, staff, and alumni in a joyful tribute to the school's rich history and bright future.
The school was transformed into a nostalgic 1970s scene, with pupils and staff donning retro outfits to honour the decade of the school's establishment. The festivities included a creative project where the current school logo was recreated using recycled bottle tops, showcasing both artistic flair and a commitment to sustainability.
Other highlights included a comparison of 1970s and modern lunchboxes, classic party games, and milkshake-making sessions that paid homage to the land's dairy farming roots. Children also engaged in research and art projects about the 1970s, deepening their understanding of the era and the school's evolution.
Former staff members returned to share cherished memories, while current pupils wrote heartfelt letters to future students which were sealed in a time capsule and buried on school grounds to be discovered by generations to come.
Headteacher, Mrs Elizabeth Keys said:"Our 50th Anniversary has been a truly joyful occasion, filled with laughter, learning, and a wonderful sense of togetherness. The children have had so much fun exploring our school's history, meeting former staff and pupils, and taking part in a wide range of exciting activities.
"From planting a time capsule to engaging in cross-curricular projects, every moment has strengthened our sense of community and showcased the creativity and enthusiasm of our pupils."
Cardiff's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said:
"The 50thcelebrations are a reminder of how Glyncoed Primary School has grown and thrived over the decades and it is heartening to hear how the pupils have been engaged in learning about the past while leaving their own mark on the school's future."
