Cardiff parks apprentice wins ‘Shining Star' Award
A Cardiff parks apprentice has won a ‘Shining Star Apprentice of the Year' Award.
Morgan, who started his parks career in 2019 with a Foundation Apprenticeship in Sports Turf Maintenance before going on to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship and secure a full-time role as part of the team that look after Cardiff's sports pitches, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have won the award as it's recognition of my hard work in the last seven years."
The awards are given to individuals who have excelled in their apprenticeships but also demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, and a genuine passion for learning and public service. Having battled serious health issues as a child, and more recently overcome a brain tumour, Morgan embodies all of these qualities and more.
Rainwater harvesting making Cardiff's parks greener
A new rainwater harvesting system is now supplying up to 60% of the water needed to look after the 350,000 plants that are grown in greenhouses in Bute Park each year.
Installed as part of Cardiff Council's ‘One Planet Cardiff' response to the climate emergency, the system comprises two storage tanks capable of holding a total of 48,000 litres. Based on recent rainfall data, it has the potential to collect 1738m3 of rainwater water annually.
Before being pumped back into the greenhouses, the water is UV-filtered to kill any pathogens. This helps keep the plants well-cared for ahead of them being planted in the parks across Cardiff, used in the hanging baskets and planters that decorate the city centre, or sold directly to the public from the Nursery Shop at Bute Park Visitor Centre.
New Local History Hub Launches in Cardiff to bring the city's stories into classrooms and communities
A new initiative is launching this autumn in Cardiff to help young people discover and celebrate the city's rich local history. As part of a UK-wide pilot, Cardiff has been selected as one of only five areas to host a Local History Hub, a teacher-led project designed to connect schools, historical sites, and community organisations through storytelling and place-based learning.
The Cardiff hub is spearheaded by Elizabeth Berry, Headteacher of Bryn Celyn Primary School, and aims to make history more accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for learners and their communities.
Elizabeth Berry, Headteacher of Bryn Celyn Primary School said: "I'm thrilled to be leading the Cardiff Local History Hub at Bryn Celyn Primary School! It's an exciting opportunity to explore our city's rich heritage and bring history to life. Collaborating with other schools and professionals will make learning meaningful, fun, and deeply connected to our local community and its stories.
